01-06-2006 - Pastoral Career Retirement Realities . . .

Retirement Preparation Strategy

I just received notice a few weeks back, that after 30 years of pastoral ministry, my retirement income from my faith group will be a whopping $354 per month! And that's after I reach the age of 65. When it comes to preparing for retirement, I feel like I have really blown it. There is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to my retirement preparation frustrations. Certainly I could have taken specific actions but in most of the smaller churches that I served we were more into financial survival than retirement preparation strategy. Like my wife paying her tithe so the church could pay me. (Yeah Kinda dumb but probably done by many pastors of small churches.)

Avoiding Financial Bitterness

I know many people who are broke at retirement blame their employer. But for me that just leads me to becoming a bitter broke retired pastor. My wife has already served notice she will put up with the broke part but not the bitter part.

Retirement Preparation Decisions

So facing retirement preparation realities has caused me to make several decisions:
  • I have decided to forego retirement and work til death takes me. (I have always wanted my final word to be "furthermore. . .")
  • I have decided to think in terms of creating the illusion of having principle, making believe that my internet income from my website is the interest from some big nest egg. At this point, that amount is equal to half of what my denomination's pension plan will pay me per month.
  • I have decided that becoming a chaplain was a good ministry career decision, because there is still a market for older chaplains and I can extend my chaplaincy career into my 80's if I need to. (It seems many church's want a 35 year old pastor with 40 years of experience!)
  • I have decided to post this blog so I can get to work in order to keep the chaplain job I have.

12-06-2006 - Pastors Income Creating Strategy. . .

Underpaid Pastors Needing An Additional Income Source

Let's add to that list of would be internet entrepreneurs underpaid pastors needing an income source to supplement their salary. For the most part I have discovered that pastors are some of the most creative entrepreneurs I have met. But their creative business energy is poured into marketing the local church and promoting the ministry they feel called to serve. Why not use some of that business creativity and entrepreneurial drive to fund your own retirement or fund your own ministry. Someday, if you heed my advice, you will thank me for encouraging you to be an advocate for yourself. (I don't see anyone else lining up for the job to be your income advocate.) 15-06-2006 - RV Buying and Retirement Preparation. . .

Retirement Facts That Concern Me

My wife and I attended a funeral yesterday. Now my life is all about death and dying because I am a hospice chaplain. As we gathered to honor our loved one and to celebrate her life, I was once again confronted with some realities regarding life, relationships, death, and retirement. One of the reasons for many of us to explore home based business opportunities is because an internet business provides an income stream for those of us who need to catch up in our retirement preparation strategy. I hope you buy a nice big expensive RV if you are one of my friends or relatives who did better in your retirement strategy than I did. Your purchase of a nice big RV is one my retirement strategies, so don't skimp on your RV purchase. Onward with purpose, Chaplain Paul L. Slater
Here are some of my catch up strategies that may even make it possible for me to take early retirement before I am 85 and then I can buy my own RV while I still have a driver's license: Encourage others to do what I have done -- be an Infopreneur, which is a Christian business home based, ministry/business website. 24-06-2006 - Updating Our Kitchen As A Certified Unhandy Handyman. . .

My wife declared it was time to replace our kitchen floor. Now as a certified unhandy handy man, I often get frustrated in my attempts to remodel our home. Recently I tore out our old kitchen flooring in what I supposed was a simple flooring replacement project. But just like any home remodeling task I attempt, I try to make it much more complicated than it needs to be. Why did I think I needed to replace a perfectly good hardwood kitchen floor?
  • The flooring was about 3/4's of an inch higher than the hardwood floor next to it, which made it dangerous because we would stumble into the kitchen.
  • I could not remove the old inefficient dishwasher due to the kitchen floor being added after the dishwasher was in. We had to remove the floor to replace our dishwashing relic with a new efficient and quieter dishwasher.
  • Laminate flooring, so I was told, is the easiest and simplest kitchen floor project that a certified unhandy handyman can do.
Besides, this will be just one more possible career change possibility that I will rule out rather quickly due to my certification as a unhandy handyman. Onward and upward, Chaplain Paul L. Slater
