01-01-2007 - Moving State To State. . .

Moving was a common experience for me starting as an infant:

Our family moved often. We moved so much we eventually bought a trailer, the kind you lived in, before they became known as mobile homes or modular homes.

Born in Connecticut, my first move came before I was one year old, from Hartford to Phoenix, Arizona.

My Dad was in road constuction, with several tries at owning a small business just to stop the moving.

Somewhere along the line, I decided to think of moving in a positive light, rather than negatively.

So what are some of the advantages of moving so much (19 grade schools and 3 high schools)?

  • I developed the quality of flexibility, being able to adapt to new settings and changing situations.
  • I learned there are a lot of places I don't want to live.
  • Best of all, I have a lot of sports teams that I can root for, with this being the deciding factor for who will be the team I support -- Did I ever live there?

Take the Fiesta Bowl being played in Glendale, Arizona, perhaps 10 miles from one of my boyhood homes. Boise State Broncos verses the Oklahoma Sooners.

I am rooting for Boise State, simply because one of my pastoral assignments was serving as Associate Pastor at Boise First Church of the Nazarene back in the 1980's.

Right now at halftime, Boise State is ahead of Oklahoma. Go Broncos! You see, I never lived in Oklahoma.

Onward and upward,

Chaplain Paul L. Slater

02-01-2007 - Retelling the Story of David and Goliath. . .

Well, they did it -- Boise State University beat University of Oklahoma in one of the most enjoyable football games I have ever seen.

As the football commentators described this unique college football match up, they became Bible commentators using the Bible story of David and Goliath to compare the teams.

Boise State Broncos was David, the teenage shepherd boy and Oklahoma Sooners was Giant Goliath. Yet in reality, they were the two top winning college foot ball teams in the last 5 years.

Some people see David, the shepherd boy, as a representation of the small business little guy verses the corporate giant.

Yet in this overtime football thriller, somehow Shepherd Boy State hits Giant Goliath State with a decisive winning blow, emerging the winner over some big odds.

Most of us relate to David as we fight the giants in our lives. To many, the giant David went up against was too big to hit. But to David, the giant was too big to miss.

Are there giants in your life you won't even attempt to stand up to in this new year of 2007?

Get out your tiny slingshot, pick up 5 stones, and, embracing God's offer to be with you in the battles against the giants in your life, face them straight on.

31-01-2007 - A Career With Cricket Communications...

Good Phones: Cricket Communications From An Employee's Perspective

Bryan, my nephew, has worked for Cricket Communications for several years.

Now an IT computer technician, he figured out while still in high school that the fastest growing career opportunities would be careers in the computer IT field within the exploding communications industry.

We know that he flies into San Diego for his telecommunications job. I guess he attends career related training meetings several times a year,

So I just assumed Cricket Communication had San Diego wireless service. Even though the headquarters for Cricket Wireless Communications is in San Diego, California, he was always telling me I couldn't get Cricket wireless service here.

Good News: Cricket Communications Is Now In San Diego

He often bragged that Cricket Communications is rapidly becoming the nation's first and leading wireless home phone.

Just be patient Uncle Paul. Cricket Communications will have service in San Diego soon.

He would then begin describing how the Cricket Communication wireless program so great.

I guess that if you work for one of the fastest wireless communication companies, you should be proud of the wireless phone products they offer.

If you want to see why my nephew enjoys his Cricket Communication Career and brags about the wireless service they offer, check out Cricket Career Article. .

Onward with purpose,

Chaplain Paul Slater
